Bread (Toula M)

Buns with Feta Cheese and Olives

There's nothing like the smell of fresh baked bread.  Just ask anyone in my uncle and aunt's condo unit in Florida and they'll tell you the same.  As aunt Toula baked away, the crowd outside her condo unit grew by the minute.  Everyone gathered around the door in hopes of receiving a piece of bread or two.  Of course my aunt is always one to share which pleased us all!

She made a variety of buns and braided loaves of bread.  Pair that up with some Dodoni Greek Feta and Kalamata Olives and you've got an amazingly delicious snack, or perhaps I should be saying meal.  It was so filling and so delicious!

Ingredients:
1.5 Tsp Salt
1 cup canola Oil
1/2 cup Sugar
3 Eggs
4 Tbsp Crisco (Butter Crisco)
2 heaping Tbsp instant Yeast
All Purpose Flour (5 Roses)

1.  In a bowl, add salt, oil and sugar.
2.  Add eggs.
3.  Add Crisco and mix with a fork.
4.  Gradually add water while mixing with a fork.
5.  Gradually add flour and continue to mix with a fork.
6.  Continue to knead dough with hands once no longer able to mix with a fork.
7.  Keep adding flour as you knead.
8. Stop adding flour once the dough stops sticking to your hands.
9.  Batch of dough is very large and difficult to work.  Transfer to a clean work surface and continue to knead.  Cut out smaller pieces and continue to knead.
10.  Place kneaded pieces back into bowl.
11.  Layer the kneaded pieces upon one another.  (They will become one batch again).
12.  Cover with BPA free plastic wrap.
13.  Cover with a towel and allow to rise.
14.  Ready when doubled in size.
15.  Grease baking pan with Crisco.
16.  Cut out small pieces.
17.  Roll and shape.
18.  Place onto baking pan.
19.  Make all different shapes as shown below.  Cover and allow to rise in size before baking.
20.  Just before ready to bake, baste with an egg wash.
21.  Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
22.  Bake at 350F for 35 to 45 minutes (depending on stove and time of year).

  1. Wow.. you successfully made bread and kneaded the dough with hands! I am amazed. I think I won't be making any bread any time soon unless I manage to buy a mixer with paddle attachment to knead the dough.
